THE HISTORY OF TANGO DANCE – 1940/1960  “The Golden Years”

Produced by Gustavo Benzecry Sabá, edited and translated to the English by María Olivera, this 5o minute documentary is the first to focus on the history of dancers who contributed to the explosion of tango as a massive social dance culture during the 1940’s and 1950’s.

It includes interviews to the most renowned creators of this boom, as well as the largest collection of clips of dancers of the golden years ever put together.   It is spiced up with information regarding the social environment in the mid 20^th century’s Buenos Aires that influenced the ups and downs of the tango culture.

El “Cachafaz” & Carmencita Calderón, Juan Carlos Copes & María Nieves,  “Fino” & Teresa, “Virulazo” & Elvira, “Nito” & Elba, Gerado y Martha Portalea,  Antonio Todaro & his daughter Inés, “La Negra” Margarita are only some of the more than 30 couples to be seen.

In addition to our weekly Tango Tea Practica on Saturdays from 4 to 6pm;  our ballroom is used from 6 to 7 pm for Aikido on Tuesdays , and for WHI-Yoga on Wednesdays.

Weller House Inn guests can schedule free floor time in the ballroom or the internet-cafe practica room! Rooms are reasonably priced, and some accommodate extra twin beds – we are happy to create ‘dancer dorms’ directly under the ballroom. Weekend room rates range from $140-$190 for two people with continental breakfast ($20 more for full breakfast); ‘dancer dorms’ with 4 people per room are $50/person with continental, $60 with full breakfast.

The beautiful 1886 Virgin Redwood Ballroom is buffed with orange oil and beeswax, and 900 square feet of old growth fir floor carefully refinished for your dancing pleasure.  It is illuminated by a hand-forged bronze chandelier by Coe Studios, and windows overlooking gardens, historic Skunk Train Depot, and the mighty Pacific. 

We also have a downstairs Practica room with mirrors,  internet access, and wide screen TV at just the right height for viewing during practice.  Come and dance!
